Plano optics (or optical flats) can have one or both sides that are polished to specification, depending on the application. One-sided optical flats are often used as reference surfaces to test the flatness of optical windows, prisms, and other plano optics. Double sided optical flats can be test plates as well, but can also serve as optical windows due to their ability to transmit light. The material that optical windows are made from depends on the application, as different materials transmit light at different wavelengths.
